George crossing home plate
Jersey Shore 4 Flemington 1 (George's Homer)

From the Ball/Stickley Archives

Jeanne Stickley sent this photo to Collette and Rashleigh many years ago. Recently Jeanne found it among Rashleigh's things. He had kept it all these years.

Flemington was the little town adjacent to Lock Haven where we lived when I worked at Piper. I believe this game was during the first season for the ball field. I watched the field take shape fairly quickly when some of the local dads decided that it was needed. The field was not far from our backyard. From this point you could see the Lock Haven hospital on the hill to the Northwest.

George's homer was a blast. It was still rising as it crossed the center field fence. It must have been quite a shock to the Jersey Shore pitcher who was used to having his own way on the diamond. But, alas, it was the only bright spot as Flemington went down to defeat. Score, I believe, ended at 4 to 1. This was a regional playoff game and ended the season for a good Flemington team.

Rumor has it that George will come out of retirement if there is another base ball strike.
