Glenn Stickley, nephew of Jeanne & I, and youngest child of Jack & Mary Lou Stickley, has come up with a big family first: He has won an Emmy. Amandus would be puzzled but proud.
"The Emmy Awards recognize excellence within various areas of the television industry. The awards are a symbol of peer recognition from over 12,000 members of the Academy. Each member casts a ballot for the category of competition in their field of expertise."
"The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences tonight (Sunday, September 18, 2005) awarded the 2004-2005 Primetime Emmys for programs and individual achievements on the 57th Annual Emmy Awards originating on the CBS Television Network from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles."
"Outstanding Reality-Competition Program" "The Amazing Race CBS Amazing Race Productions Inc. and Touchstone Television Productions, LLC in association with Jerry Bruckheimer Television and WorldRace Productions Inc."
This is the third straight year that Amazing Race has won this award. Going into last season Glenn had advanced to the level of Senior Producer, making him eligible for personal recognition, i. e. his own Emmy!
The official stuff continues with a list of the show's individual recipients. But we are interested in only this one:
Darryl Zanuck, no doubt, is getting worried.
Glenn & Julia with a tight grip on the Emmy
Julia Ragland is the woman who sold Glenn the house he bought recently. I suppose we can conclude that Glenn is happy with his new house.
But it is not just business. Julia has been a good friend, someone he enjoys being with. It might also be that Glenn felt he needed someone with Julia's looks in a world of stars, starlets and other glamour types.
As regular readers may already know Helen is one of the heroes of this website. Helen is my mother and Glenn's grandmother.
In high school and during the first two years of college Glenn worked at a local supermarket close by Helen's apartment home. I remember Helen mentioning, more than once, Glenn stopping by to see her. This was certainly a blessing to Helen in her later years.
It was clear that Helen enjoyed these visits. It was also important that Glenn was able to quickly respond to Helen's needs for various items from the Supermarket. But I suspect that the special relationship between grandmother and grandson was based on something deeper than mere utility and emotional support.
Glenn's brains probably come from both sides of my family (Stickley & Murphy) but any show biz flair definitely came from the Murphy's. Both Helen and her brother Joe (Joseph Murphy) enjoyed entertaining others. Helen was frequently on stage with what might be called, in polite society, repartee. To Helen it was all wise cracks. I'm sure that Glenn was able to handle himself quite well in this department. He might also be able to come up with an appropriate pun from time to time. The pun was another of Helen's favorite forms of humor.
But, unfortunately, the day came when Glenn had to make the move to the main Penn State campus at State College.
Glenn earned a degree in English and a second degree in film/video. As I remember it Glenn never hesitated. Upon graduation he cleaned up his affairs and headed straight for Hollywood.
The structure of the film/video industry today seems designed to give an aggressive worker
Return to HOME pagea wealth of experience very quickly. Rather than fitting comfortably into the mold of a single organization you are moving and shifting fairly regularly from one coalition to another each with a similar or maybe quite a different project. It seems that Glenn has soaked up and effectively used all of his experience to date.
But Glenn is aiming beyond the production aspects of film making. Glenn's dream is to be a writer and more specifically a writer of comedy movies. A successful writer can remain at home and have the work come to him. His plan seems eminently sensible to me. But first he has to break the ice and get some notice as a writer.
Glenn has submitted scripts to the appropriate people. He feels that he has been close to a sale and means to keep right on writing and submitting. With Amandus, Helen and Joe in Heaven cheering and praying for him how can he fail?
If you would like to meet Glenn's parents and his brother and sister you can do so, at least photographically, on this website at Richard & Sylvia's wedding. Glenn was unable to be there for cousin Sylvia's big event. But you will meet Jack and Mary Lou Stickley, Glenn's parents, plus sister Sandy and brother John along with their spouses. In addition there will be an uncle and an aunt (Jeanne & I) and two more cousin's my sons George and Gene, Jr.
Through digital magic we are all 17 years younger in these photos which, as I see it, is a definite advantage from the appearance standpoint.
Glenn hopes to be with us when Gene, Jr. weds Kara Dougherty on December 3 if he can make it. But Helen and the rest of us realize that for any real show biz trooper the show must go on.
